Portuguese Bend Beach - Rancho Palos Verdes

This public beach in Rancho Palos Verdes is accessible from Trump National Golf Course.  It is a hike down the cliff to reach the sand, but it is one of my favorite places to walk on the entire Palos Verdes Peninsula.  It's also a great workout when you climb the switchback trail up the cliff on your return.

The public beach area is located adjacent to the private Portuguese Bend Beach off Palos Verdes Drive South in Rancho Palos Verdes.  There is a lifeguard station but I have been there many times when no lifeguard was present.  It is not a popular beach for swimming.  Surfers do frequent this beach but beware of the rocks both in and out of the water.

Low tide is a wonderful time to stroll along the water's edge and view tide pools and the sea creatures. I've seen some beautiful starfish at this beach.  I always watch for another piece of sea glass to add to my collection when I'm visiting this beach.

Palos Verdes is better known for its towering cliffs than for its beaches, but we do have a few.  Perhaps they don't compare with those in Hermosa and Manhattan on their world famous Strands, but our little beaches possess their on brand of charm.

Hi Norma... I love those quiet beaches that are more or less just left alone. That's a nice view in the video. I'm always fascinated how places get their names. Portuguese Bend certainly stirs my imagination.

Rene - Here's your answer straight from Wikipedia:   The name Portuguese Bend comes from the whaling activies of the Portuguese whalemen from the Azores.
