"Get out of the street. Don't you know you can get hit by a car?" Years ago my then two-year-old son uttered those words to a homeless man pushing a shopping cart down the center of Beach Drive in St. Petersburg, Florida. Last week I found myself shooing a dog from the center of Colt Road in Rancho Palos Verdes and saying the same words. Some things never change--the middle of a busy street is not a safe place for man or dog and even a two-year-old understands the danger.
I was on my way to show a house, and as I rounded a sharp curve in the road a little dog suddenly appeared a few feet from my front tire. After braking and waiting for the dog to scamper up the embankment (I hoped he was returning home) I continued on to meet my clients.
When I returned to my car, the same dog-on-the-run made another appearance. I found myself quoting my toddler son and I guess my elevated voice caused the owner to realize her dog was roaming the neighborhood. The dog dashed inside the opened door, and in one fell swoop I saved a dog from a possible unhappy ending and returned to the office to began the offer I hope will have a happy ending.

Yes, I hoped a child was not chasing the dog into the street...
I am sure the neighbor appreciated your assistance in getting her dog to safety. Thanks for sharing.
Norma, I have lost count of how many times I have rescued dogs running lose. I've even rescued a dog in the rain while wearing a suit. The dog survived ... my suit did not. I did not care! Your offer will have a happy ending ... it certainly deserves a happy ending given that you got the attention of the dogs owner which likely saved the dogs life!
Oh, by the way, please keep me in mind for .... (LOL) Seriously? Yes, we will keep you in mind ... but not for what you want! Gheez ...
Raising my children, I can't count how many times I heard them utter the same words my mother raised me with... So obviously, I had been passing on her words of wisdom. I loved your story and hope it has a happy ending for your offer as well as it did the doggie!
Hi, Norma:
I'm just wondering where your son is today! And just about every day around here...it's amazing how many folks (including families of 3,4,6 folks with kids in strollers) will just walk right out in front of you.
I posted about it a while back, when I'd done a bit of research and found 18 or so deaths around here in about 6 months where the deceased were absolutely not in a crosswalk, or (in maybe 2 cases) did bother to cross at the crosswalk but against the light there.
Lots of families get torn apart by this- and I truly wish the police around here would do something. But alas, they're downtown looking to arrest homeless folks and the folks that look to feed 'em.
Hi Norma! How clever of your son at such a young age! You've obviously taught him well. Beach Drive and the vicinity in St. Petersburg boasts a lot of great restaurants and an eclectic ambiance. The beaches are just as gorgeous!
