The spy novelist, John Le Carre, wrote, "A desk is a dangerous place from which to view the world." The past week I spent most of my waking hours seated at my either my home office desk or office desk staring at my computer screen. Two events tethered me to my office: 1) A client is making a long awaited visit to LA in the next few days and as luck would have it his top two home choices both sold within the last few days. 2) A seller's property is closing early (that's good) but their top two choices for a replacement home are bogged down with issues--one is tied up in court and the other has structural issues (not so good).
As the week progressed I was either scrolling through all the luxury home listings in the Los Angeles area, or strategizing, countering, networking and negotiating. I did not preview a single property and that's unusual for me. I'm a consumer centric agent, always have been, and I make it a habit to preview new listings of interest to my clients and report back to them with information that cannot be garnered by viewing photos or reading a property description online.
I'm a field agent, but I find I spend more and more time viewing the world from my computer screen, my Smart Phone and iPad. Thank heavens, I have an office with a view of the Palos Verdes hills! So although I'm starting over with my search for the perfect luxury home (more computer time) and moving closer to resolving the issues with my client's replacement home (more phone and email time), I'm going to make sure my view of the world is not always observed via techie tools. Although I do not want to live without them, I need to get out in the field this week, preview a few new luxury home listings, and drop by the office of the "agent on the other side" and do a little face-to-face negotiating.
I'm expecting good things to happen this week, but not without moving away from my desk.
